Barracudas made the journey to Chelmer Village this week to play Wilvale Rangers Spartans, who they’d met twice last season and had both been very good games. Barracudas had a squad of 10 for this match, only missing captain Jack with Josh deputising in his absence.
The opening exchanges were fairly even with both defences standing firm and chances difficult to come by for both sides. It was Barracudas who were first able to unlock the opposing defence with a lovely team goal – Josh getting past a couple of defenders, before laying the ball off to George, who could have shot but unselfishly passed to the better placed Tyler, who finished with a left footed strike into the bottom corner. It was great to see a goal created from a good passing move.
Barracudas were able to see the first half out without conceding with some excellent defending, especially from last man Ollie C, who Wilvale found it very difficult to get past. There was also one incredible save from Charlie who somehow turned the ball round the post when a Wilvale player had shot from point blank range!
In the second half, Barracudas were unlucky to concede early on when a shot, which Charlie was likely to have had covered, took an unfortunate deflection and crept into the corner of the net. This was followed by perhaps an even more unfortunate goal to concede when a cross hit the post and landed in Charlie’s arms, but was deemed by the referee to have crossed the line. With their tails up, Wilvale then added another to their tally soon after.
Barracudas heads didn’t drop though and with still a fair amount of time left in the match, continued to plug away to try to turn the match around. However, despite a flurry of corners and a few half chances, Barracudas were unable to get any further goals.
This was a competitive match against another good team which could easily have gone either way. There were plenty of positives but still lots to work on in training to try to be competitive in the Dengie division, which is of a very high standard.
An honourable mention goes to Ollie C for another outstanding defensive performance (in which he didn’t concede a goal during the time he was on the pitch) but the Man of the Match trophy was awarded to Tyler for his energy, excellent running up and down the pitch and for a well taken goal.
