With a depleted squad, the Barracudas travelled to Witham this week to play Valley Green Thunder, a team they played against twice last season.
This was the Barracudas third consecutive away trip and was played with conditions wet underfoot, although fortunately the rain held off for most of the match.
Valley Green made a strong start to the match and took the lead in just the third minute, with a finish from close range. For most of the first half after that, the match was fairly even with both defences on top and little in the way of clear cut opportunities for either side.
As is often the case, it took something special to beat Charlie in goal and just before half time, Valley Green scored again with a fine strike that found the top corner. The Barracudas continued to work hard in the second half and it again took a shot into the top corner to beat Charlie, who was having a good game.
With just one sub, tiredness did start to show and Valley Green added another shortly after. However the Barracudas kept battling to the end and deserved their consolation goal. It was a nice build up involving Louie and Jack, who found a pass to Josh in space – his low and hard shot was saved by the keeper but George was on hand to pounce on the rebound for a goal on his debut.
An honourable mention to Ollie M whose fierce determination was particularly impressive on the day but the Man of the Match trophy was deservedly awarded to Ollie C for another excellent disciplined performance in defence and who was able to thwart most of the opposing team’s attacks that came his way.
