Dunmow United Barracudas U9s v Valley Green Vikings U9s

19/5/2019

It was an early afternoon kick off for the final match of the 2018/19 season, with Barracudas hoping to finish well, having been on an excellent run in the last few months.
Barracudas started the match on the front foot, looking dangerous on the attack and were creating chances. In the fourth minute of the game, captain Jack was unlucky to see his shot come back off the post and land to safety. There were plenty of other efforts on goal by Barracudas in the first period, but whenever they had a shot on target, they were thwarted by the outstanding VG Vikings goalkeeper, who made save after save.

Barracudas’ defence hadn’t been troubled too much in the first half but were hit by a sucker punch in added time at the end of the first half. VG Vikings hit Barracudas on the break and scored with a neat finish, with their player sliding in to knock the ball past the onrushing goalkeeper Charlie, and into the bottom corner.

At the interval, despite the way the half had finished, there was plenty of reason for optimism, as Barracudas had posed an attacking threat throughout the first half and it was felt that goals weren’t far away.

The second half continued in much the same way as the first, with Barracudas doing a lot of the attacking but once again, the opposing goalkeeper was in impressive form, stopping everything that came his way. Ollie C was particularly unlucky to be denied a goal when his shot, destined for the roof of the net was superbly tipped over the bar.

There was a sense of déjà vu when with seven minutes on the clock remaining, VG Vikings added to their tally with another breakaway goal. Barracudas were caught pushing men forward and VG Vikings outnumbered them on the break, finishing with a nicely taken shot in off the post.

As has been a theme this season however, Barracudas kept going until the end and were rewarded two minutes later with the goal of the match – and a contender for goal of the season! Barracudas were awarded a free kick between the penalty area and halfway line – Hugo stepped up and struck it with power and precision, perfectly placing it into the top corner! It was going to take something special to beat the excellent VG Vikings goalkeeper and that was it!

Barracudas continued to push forward and in the third minute of added time, Jack struck a shot that hit the crossbar – the second time in the match he had hit the woodwork! Eventually time ran out but it was a good battling effort.

The Man of the Match trophy was awarded to Hugo for his moment of magic – a tremendous free kick, which he had been working hard on perfecting in training.

Well done to all the lads that have played this season – Charlie, Hugo, Ollie C, Ollie M, Tyler, Jack, Josh, Zak, Louie, Alfie, Jesse and George (plus Kabir who was with the team at the start of the season) – a lot of progress has been made and there have been some great matches with some excellent performances!
