Barracudas hosted Silver End in this midday kick off for their second meeting of 2019. A close game was expected after a really competitive match was played in January.
It was Barracudas who got off to a flyer, with possibly the quickest goal they have ever scored! Josh linked up with Tyler in the very first move of the game – and with just nine seconds registered on the clock, Tyler hit an unstoppable low hard shot into the bottom corner to give Barracudas the perfect start.
Credit has to be given to both team’s defences as following the early goal, opportunities to score were hard to come by as both back lines stood firm. Barracudas had a few half chances but when they did break through the Silver End defence, they found the opposition goalkeeper in fine form.
Just before the half time whistle however, Barracudas were able to score again. It was fantastic work from Jesse on the left hand side, winning the ball before laying the ball off to Josh, who showed good feet to escape the attentions of the last defender, before firing into the bottom corner.
The second half followed a similar pattern to the first with excellent defending from both sides. There were a few opportunities, mainly for Barracudas, but they were generally either well defended or stopped by the goalkeeper.
George was so unlucky not to get on the scoresheet when he charged in to block a Silver End defensive clearance - the ball flew goalwards and looked destined for the bottom corner, but a combination of the post and goalkeeper managed to keep the ball out! A real head in hands moment!
In the last minute of added time in the second half, Barracudas finally added to their tally. Josh dispossessed a Silver End defender, ran down the left wing before cutting inside and finding a nice pass to Hugo, who was on hand to shoot first time, low and hard into the net. It was a good goal to finish the match with the final whistle blown straight afterwards.
This was a good disciplined defensive display, rewarded with a thoroughly deserved clean sheet - the first one in a league match for Barracudas since September 2017! The defensive combination of Ollie C and Louie, supported at different times by Jack, George, Hugo and Ollie M did a great job to protect goalkeeper Charlie, who himself made a couple of very good saves on the rare occasions that he was called into action. As ever, Charlie was extremely reliable between the sticks with his excellent distribution of the ball and making saves when required.
On an attacking front, Barracudas were up against a good defence, but still created chances and were rewarded with three good goals. The midfield of Tyler, Jesse and Zak offered excellent support to Josh up front, with Jack, George, Hugo and Ollie M also playing their part with some really good attacking play in the sections of the match when they were further forward.
There were so many candidates for Man of the Match as everyone contributed to what was one of the most complete all round performances of the season. Charlie received an honourable mention for his excellent distribution, making some good saves, organising his defence and keeping a clean sheet. Zak also got a mention for his excellent work rate, nice skills, composure on the ball and strong tackling whilst playing a new role in midfield.
However the Man of the Match trophy was awarded to Ollie C for a superb defensive display, some great tackling, his contribution to keeping a clean sheet, in addition to showing some lovely skills on a couple of occasions while bringing the ball out of defence – really well deserved!
