After a mid season divisional reshuffle, Barracudas opened their campaign in the Crouch Division with a home match against neighbours Dunmow Rhodes Lions.
This was a contest between two teams that hadn’t met since early in the Barracudas’ very first season, so was a highly anticipated local derby that everyone had been really looking forward to.
Lions were quickest out of the blocks and scored within the first twenty seconds of the match, which was an early wake up call for Barracudas! Just six minutes later, Lions had the ball in the net again after an excellent run and finish by their player.
Barracudas gradually found their feet and started to attack, creating a few chances, but either found the Lions’ keeper in good form or just missed the target. With no more goals in the first half and Barracudas starting to create chances, there was still all to play for going into the second half.
Barracudas started the second half well and finally got themselves on the scoresheet after some great play down the left from Louie, who then found a nice pass to Jack. With his back to goal, Jack turned the last defender and struck a ferocious, unstoppable shot past the keeper!
Barracudas were still in the game and continued to apply the pressure and in the very last minute of the game, Zak fed a pass through to Josh, who with a ‘Ronaldo chop’ and then a sidestep of their defender, blasted the ball high into the net from a tricky angle.
There was still time for another goal in injury time - a dangerous corner from Jack into the box found Zak, who showed great technique to neatly volley in from close range – a lovely goal and great celebrations to match!
It was an excellent second half performance with Charlie in goal, Ollie C and Hugo all keeping things tight defensively, Louie, Ollie, George, Alfie and Jack all working hard in midfield with Zak and Josh up top looking to create opportunities and finding goals at crucial times.
It was an exciting game to begin the new phase of the season in the Crouch Division – hopefully there will be many more entertaining games like this to come. Every player gave their all and the team kept going and believing until the final whistle which was great to see!
Alfie received an honourable mention for his hard work in both defence and midfield but the Man of the Match trophy was awarded to Zak for his assist for Barracudas’ second goal and his superbly taken finish in injury time!
