In an early kick off and wet, muddy conditions, Barracudas went into this match in decent form, but having met the same opposition just five weeks earlier, knew that Broomfield Tigers were a good team and this was likely to be a tough match.
Barracudas got off to the perfect start when with barely a minute on the clock, captain Jack fired a shot goalwards and a Broomfield defender handled the ball in the area – penalty! There was no doubt about the decision or the quality of the penalty that was taken by Jack himself – a really well struck right footed shot that was hit high to the keeper’s left. There was no stopping that – a great penalty!
It didn’t take long for Broomfield to find their feet however and shortly after, they were back on level terms. After Barracudas’ great start, Broomfield were starting to play some nice passing football - barely five minutes had gone and they turned the match around and scored for a second time. Barracudas needed to weather the storm a little at this stage and goalkeeper Charlie was then on hand to make an incredible save, managing to get his fingertips to a really good shot that was destined for the top corner and divert it onto the post – a definite contender for save of the season!
Broomfield then got themselves on the scoresheet once again after 15 minutes, with a well placed shot from the edge of the area. Zak, Tyler and Josh were working hard to create openings going forward but at this point in the match opportunities were hard to come by as Broomfield had most of the momentum. Barracudas didn’t let their heads drop though and kept things tight defensively with Louie and Ollie C steadying the ship and Barracudas saw the rest of the half out with no more goals at either end.
Recent matches have shown a real spirit from the lads to not ever give up and Barracudas took a belief that they could turn this match around into the second half. The second half was tight for a long time but Barracudas got just the lift they needed with around ten minutes to go when a Broomfield player, being put under pressure from Tyler, found his own net from long range while trying to clear the danger.
The momentum had switched and at this point Barracudas were doing most of the attacking. With just over five minutes left, Barracudas scored again. The pressure had been building and Josh got a shot away from close range which a Broomfield defender could only help in past the keeper.
Barracudas were finishing the match strongly and there was still time for another couple of twists and turns. Firstly, in the last minute, Josh got hold of the ball on the edge of the area, dummied the Broomfield defender by feigning to shoot with his right foot, before making space to get a shot in with his left, firing into the bottom corner. Then, perhaps as Barracudas were still celebrating, in added time, Broomfield went up the other end and notched another goal themselves! Soon after the eighth and final goal of the game, the final whistle blew - it was another entertaining game and the outcome of the match was probably a fair reflection overall.
George received an honourable mention in this match for his excellent positional sense and intelligent passing, as did Alfie for showing tremendous battling qualities, commitment and really working hard for the team. The Man of the Match trophy was awarded however to Hugo, whose workrate in midfield was excellent, covered the defence as needed, was winning challenges, joined the attacks and also showed extremely good positional sense.
