Dunmow United Barracudas U9s v Broomfield Youth Jaguars U9s

24/3/2019

It was a late morning kick off in the sunshine for a tricky looking match, having met Broomfield Jaguars for the first time in January and found them to be excellent opponents.
Barracudas got off to a terrific start in this match, scoring an early goal when good work on the left and a cross by Josh was dispatched nicely by Zak with a looping shot over the keeper’s head for his 10th goal of the season.

It wasn’t long before Barracudas added to their tally when Alfie was first to react to a scramble in the Broomfield penalty area, firing low and hard, taking a slight deflection past the keeper for his first goal of the season.

Having notched one, Alfie had got his eye in and shortly after was on hand to score again – a corner from Jack fell to Alfie on the edge of the area. Alfie struck it with his left foot, perfectly placed into the bottom corner for his second goal of the game and the season!

It was an excellent display of attacking football in the first half and Alfie then turned provider with a nice pass on the left, finding Josh, who ran across the edge of the area past a defender, before firing low and hard in off the post for his 30th goal of the current campaign.

It was important that Barracudas didn’t become complacent at half time but they continued where they left off with another nice goal early in the second half. Josh raced forwards towards goal before passing to Alfie who was on his right – Alfie then neatly knocked the ball past the advancing keeper to complete his first ever Barracudas’ hat-trick!

In this heat, it was always going to be difficult to keep up the same level of intensity for the rest of the match and although they added no further goals, Barracudas passed the ball around really nicely and kept things tight at the back, barely giving Broomfield a sniff of goal. The defensive partnership of Ollie C and Ollie M were rock solid and the one opportunity that Broomfield did create was well tipped around the post by goalkeeper Charlie.

Having impressed in last week’s match, this was arguably an even more complete performance from Barracudas – there was solid defending, while the midfield quartet of Jack, George, Alfie and Zak gave great support to both the defence and Josh up front. There was some great attacking play with the midfielders all linking up well with Josh and there was some really slick ‘passing and moving’ that caused the opposition defence all sorts of problems. This was also the second successive clean sheet for Barracudas – the first time this has been achieved in their history!

An honourable mention was given to Charlie, Ollie C, Ollie M, Zak, Jack, George and Josh (!) (as it was such a good all round team display) but the Man of the Match trophy was awarded to Alfie, which was fully deserved, having scored his first ever Barracudas hat-trick, getting an assist for Josh’s goal and working really hard in midfield.
