On a surprisingly hot February day and a rare afternoon match, Barracudas travelled to local rivals Dunmow Rhodes Lions for their second encounter this season. The last time these teams met ended in a close match and this was no different.
Defences dominated early and there were few chances at either end – Ollie C, Louie and Alfie were mopping up the majority of Lions’ attacks while Charlie in goal was stopping anything that did get past. Hugo, Ollie M and Tyler were working hard in midfield while Josh and Zak were looking for openings further forward.
Barracudas did have opportunities in the first half with Tyler coming closest with a shot from the left unlucky to hit the post and another effort going narrowly wide. However, it was Lions who scored the only goal of the first half with a good individual goal – a run down the left and finish that just looped in.
The second half continued to be evenly matched but it was Lions who were next to score with a good strike. With their tails up, Lions visibly grew in confidence and then added to their tally shortly after.
Just like the first match against Lions when Barracudas came back from behind, the boys in orange didn’t give up. With just seven minutes left on the clock, Barracudas scored what seemed at the time to probably just be a consolation goal – an excellent cross from Tyler on the left finding Zak in a good position in the middle to tap in from close range.
Barracudas gained some fresh impetus from the goal but with time ticking, it still looked like it was going to be Lions’ day. In the very last minute, Barracudas struck again. Josh won the ball close to the half way line, advanced past a couple of players and then smashed one into the top corner. Game on?
With only the added time left to play, it looked like the two late goals wouldn’t be enough to salvage a result but Barracudas kept pushing and now had all the momentum.
A flurry of attacks and corners followed and in the fourth minute of added time, Josh hit a corner into a dangerous area, the ball went through a crowd of players and Zak kept his eye on the ball, showed some intelligent play by pulling away from his marker and got the touch that was needed to find the back of the net! What a comeback!
The final whistle blew soon after and for the second time this season, Barracudas came from behind against Lions in an exciting finish. It was great to see the team spirit to keep going to the end and eventually get their reward.
Ollie M received an honourable mention for his hard work in midfield, as did George, who sustained an injury on the morning of the match but still came to support his team (top commitment!) but the Man of the Match trophy was awarded to Zak for his brace of goals, showing his striker’s instinct and for his excellent movement to notch that crucial final goal.
