Back to winning ways.
With the Sharks hosting only their second home match, the team were in good spirits despite having the taste of defeat from the previous week still fresh in their thoughts, and were determined to put things right and get back to winning ways.
The game started evenly, with both teams looking for an opening so they could take the lead. The opposition to be fair started the better, having a number of clear-cut chances only to be thwarted by Jack who was in inspired form as he started the game in goal again for the Sharks. But on a number of occasions Jack was playing more as a sweeper than a keeper, nearly getting caught out a number of times but managing to survive on each occasion through his own skill and having lady luck on his side too.
The opposition then took the lead through some smart play, breaking through the middle and scoring with a deft touch to beat Jack on this occasion.
The Sharks continued to battle hard, with Freddie, Liam and Elliott putting in some impressive tackles in the middle of the park. Our training sessions appear to be paying off with the Sharks passing the ball well from defense to attack to create some openings and chances. Jake had a number of good chances to level the match in the first half but these were stopped by the opposition’s goal keeper who pulled off some great saves of his own. Freddie also was finding the opposition’s goal keeper hard to beat as his efforts struck the post. Josh was also making his presence felt, with some good touches and inceptions during the first half of the game, and having his best game for the Sharks.
As the first half was coming to a close, with the opposition trying to extend their lead and the Sharks trying to draw level, both teams came up short of the goal they required to achieve their aim.
A big thank you to Elliott for taking over in goal for the second half; his presence and tackling were going to missed in the middle of the park, but it gave other members of the team a chance to step up and fill the hole that was going to be left. The team did themselves proud, with Harry growing in stature in the middle park, with some nice touches, tackling, and passing, with Josh Freddie, Jack and Jake also playing well as a team.
The Sharks were pushing very hard now and got their rewards, with some smart play from Jack who was now playing on pitch, who made a mazy run down the left hand side, taking on a number of players and then crossing the ball to Jake, who managed to collect the ball and his attempted shot bobbled into Freddie’s path who calmly slotted the ball home in to the roof of the net past an impressive opposition goal keeper. The Sharks sensed the game was for the taking and continued to push for another goal to take the lead. This duly came from our reliable Jake scoring his first goal of the game, richly deserved after the effort he had put into the game so far.
The opposition wasn’t giving up though, but the Sharks were defending well and restricting their attacks well, and continued pushing, managing to score again this time through Jack. He again picked the ball up in his own half and set off on another mazy run, again beating a few players, rounding the last defender with some good skill and scoring the goal that fitted the run before it. This gave the Sharks the deserved cushion they were looking for, but as what we have come to expect, the opposition never gave up. With a small mix up in the Sharks defense, they managed to poke home a goal past our stand-in goal keeper, Elliott, who to that point hadn’t had a lot to do.
The Sharks once again showed great fighting spirit, and this time with Josh, Freddie and Harry providing assistance to Jake who managed to restore our cushion and put the Sharks within touching distance of another victory. But the opposition refused to be beaten and to their credit with a counter attack they pulled another goal back again through some smart play down the left-hand side. The Sharks were desperate to hold on to their lead, and defended brilliantly for the final few minutes of the game to hold out for the victory. Both teams were rightly applauded by the spectators for an entertaining game that they had just watched.
So once again the Sharks go into next week’s game in high spirits. Well done Lads! Kee up the good work and effort.
