With a New Year starting, we were hoping to start off with a bang and continue our winning streak... but it wasn’t to be. However, we played extremely well and I am very proud of the boys and will be looking to bounce back this week and get back to winning ways.
With the game being played on a 3G pitch rather than grass this was a new experience for the boys and I think they handled it very well.  The game started well for the Sharks taking an early lead through another goal from Jake, taking him to eleven goals in four games.  The build-up play was good, playing the ball through midfield giving Jake the chance that he gratefully took, with Elliott, Harry and Josh battling for the ball, breaking up the play and trying to push on to score more goals.
Jack once again kindly played in goal, stating his intent and determined to try and score from a goal kick in this game.  As if it was written in the stars, he dispatched a massive clearance up field, it took one bounce which bounced over the opposition’s goal keeper and nestled in the back of the net to extend our lead.  An elated Jack celebrated accordingly.  We were then hoping to push on and extend our lead.
But the opposition had other ideas, and with some good play down the right hand side they managed to claw back a goal to reduce our lead.  With the tide now turning against the Sharks, the opposition had another opportunity to score, but thanks to some brave goal keeping from Jack we managed retain our lead, but unfortunately not for too much longer.
With Elliott, Liam and Jake trying to stem the flow of the opposition’s attacks, it soon became clear that we were going to have a harder game than first thought.  The opposition managed to level the game before half time and based on the play it was deserved.  This took the wind out of the Sharks’ sails, but luckily the half time whistle blew before we feel behind.
With some encouraging words at half time and a change in goal keeper, and thanks again to Harry for bravely putting his hand up to take over goal keeping duties from Jack allowing Jack the chance to play outfield, the Sharks started the second half brightly, with opportunities falling to Jake, Liam and Freddie.  Sadly, luck wasn’t with us and the chances went a begging. A special mention here must go to Elliott who continued to battle extremely hard in defense as well as attack, breaking up many attacks and creating chances for the Sharks, while showing the desire to score a goal for himself too.
The opposition managed to take the lead, against the run of play.  This was a body blow for the boys as their efforts didn’t deserve for them to be behind in this game, but the boys showed massive amounts of character and resilience to draw themselves level.  This was through some great play from Elliott and Jake and finished off nicely from close range from Freddie who is becoming a regular scorer now and should be proud of this and continue to progress and score more goals for himself and the team as he has scored 5 goals in just four games.
With the game level, the Sharks were trying to push on to retake the lead, but with this effort the Sharks were caught short at the back and the opposition managed to regain the lead through some clever play. With the Sharks now chasing the game again, the Sharks threw caution to the wind to try and get level.  It would be important for the Sharks to score again but it wasn’t the Sharks that scored; the opposition scored after some confusion after our throw in, which gave the opposition a two goal cushion that the Sharks weren’t able to overcome.
With everybody giving their all, there is nothing more the boys could have done.  On another day we would have won this game.  So, we take the positives and learn from these defeats, but the most important thing was that the boys came off the pitch happy and they enjoyed themselves. Onwards and upwards for the Sharks. Well done boys!
