This being the Sharks second game of the season the boys had high hopes of recording their first victory of the season, but as it turned out it was the Sharks first loss of the season against an opposition that we would be expecting to be beating.
The starting team this week was Caleb in goal, Jack, Elliott, Freddie, Jake, Aidan and Giacomo with Harry, Josh, Dylan and Liam starting on the bench.
The game started well for the Sharks, with them controlling the early stages of the game, making good runs, and looking the more likely to score. But it was the opposition that broke down the field, with the Sharks defence no where to be seen, to take the lead. Things then got worse for the Sharks with the opposition scoring another two in quick succession, this seemed to knock the stuffing out of the boys.
With the Sharks trailing by a few goals now, the boys managed to get a foot hold in the game - the opposition giving away a free kick in a dangerous position. Giacomo was charged with taking this and, with a wicked strike of the ball, he managed to guide the ball into the back of the net from a distance, this gave the Sharks hope of clawing some goals back before the half time whistle went.
But this wasn’t to be. The opposition managed to restore their three-goal cushion before the half time whistle went, this gave the Sharks a mountain to climb if we were to win the game.
As the second half got under way Elliott taking over in goal from Caleb. Before the Sharks got settled into the game the opposition managed to extend the lead again. This was now becoming an exercise in keeping the score line down rather than overturning it.
The Sharks got another small boast, this time Jack managing to score for the second time in as many games with a smart strike just outside the box. But the opposition were just having a better day as the Sharks lost their shape and managed to concede another two goals and the opposition managed to run out comfortable winners on the day.
The Sharks still battled hard, but it appears that the bigger pitch and an increased number of players is something that they are still getting used to, so some hard work on the training pitch is required to learn positions and what is expected when defending against a team that is prepared to run at them. Lessons to be learned, but the most important thing and something that we try not to lose focus of is the fun that the boys are having.
So onto next week, and we are still looking for our first win of the season.
