Stones Athletic Blacks vs DUFC Vikings

Vikings were away in our 2nd game of our first season, playing against Stone Athletic Blacks. Missing both Cullen and Bastian this week gave us a chance to see how we managed with 7 players unlike last week when we had the full 9.

The game was a great example of english football, chances created at either end, quick passing, honest tackling and plenty of shots on goal.

Angus had his first taste of being in goal for the first half and proudly kept a clean sheet. Then  after the break scored a well taken goal into the bottom corner.  Maksim was our captain and worked non stop always shouting for the ball, and was pleased to score for 2nd week running, with a goal in top corner, which was calmly taken.

William was everywhere, both defending and attacking, dominating the midfield and one of Vikings constent threats, scoring again with an unstoppable shot and unselfishly linking up with others when he could have scored more himself.  Henry was solid and adept at positioning himself to be first the the loose ball, whilst releasing others with some calm passing. Josh got a chance to play in defence in first half and was solid, sweeping away danger.

Jessica, always looking to bring in other players with some good link up play and was unlucky not to get a goal herself, when on a great run through that was saved by the goalie. Jayden, despite having a sore knee at training yesterday, was involved in the centre of the field, blocking the attackers and not letting this hamper his play.

We led the first half and despite Stones coming back to level after the break, we went on to get on top of them for most of the game. The excitement of being in the lead probably exposed us a few gaps left in defense,  which enabled Stones to score a couple on the break with Josh in goal for 2nd half, being a bit exposed.

However Vikings are a new team and the game without the ball is still being learnt by us all. All in all, a really confident and well played 2nd game which shows the team are competative at this level and as we develop core skills will bring in many wins. A great game today team, really proud of you all.
