Match report - 8 January 2016
The first game of 2017 was played away from home at South Woodham Ferrers, in beautiful playing conditions and on Astro-turf, which would hopefully benefit the Stingrays passing game.
We had a full compliment of players, with the exception of George W, so the boys were keen to get a win for our absent friend. With Freddie in goal and George D and Oliver R in defence, the Jaguars would need to be on song to get anything past these three today. Zach L on the left, Christian on the right and Ollie W in the centre, all controlled the midfield from the off and with Ryan E up front we would always look a threat.
So, it didn't take the boys long to get off the mark with good interchanges between Ollie / Zach, with Ryan pouncing on a loose ball to fire home. Next stepped up Christian, capitalising on a Jaguar error and 'one-twoing' with Ryan to fire home. A neat set of passing which would be the flavour throughout the game.
The first half flew by, further strengthened in defence by James who was trying out a new position and Jasiu who looked as determined as ever. Half time team talk was to ensure the boys didn't take their foot off the accelerator and continue as they left off. To say they stuck to the game plan would turn out to be an understatement as they notched up a further seven goals!
Freddie G played outfield and was a constant threat, getting in a couple of goals through sheer strength and determination. Ryan secured a hat-trick with some neat finishing and Zach scored a beauty from a free kick, with his trademark top corner finish.
Ollie W managed one pouncing on an excellent shot from Jasiu which was parried by the keeper. It was also pleasing to see James get on the scoresheet as he chose his moment well to move up field and attack. The shot being too hard for the keeper to handle. Other chances (loads of chances in fact) came and went and the boys were truly on song. Too hot to handle, as they say.
All in all, an excellent game of football by the Stingrays, with each and every one of the players putting in a real shift. No individual MOTM today, as everyone won the award for their constant battling, excellent tracking back, sheer determination, their togetherness and all round fantastic play.
The important factor, as the boys were reminded at the end, is not about the goals (that's secondary). It's about the clean sheets, it's about enjoying yourselves, it's about trying something different and finally it's about your own development. Fair to say, everyone is developing at an alarming rate. It was a joy to watch at times and a big thanks to the travelling supporters who are always in good voice.
Thanks to the hosts, the Jaguars, for a good game and will see you at Laundry Lane soon. This one is for George W...........WELL DONE STINGRAYS!!
Next game TBA.
