Match report - 5 Feb 2017
A short journey to Boreham Recreational ground would see the Stingrays come up against a newly promoted team, who had some tall players and looked well organised during the warm up session. The boys would need to get back to their passing game this week and be aware of their defensive duties without the ball.
With Zach L covering for the absent Freddie G in goals and with no subs, this game would test the fitness of the Stingrays.
The game kicked off and the boys got straight into it. With some great tackling at the back by George D and Oliver R and break up of play in the middle by Ollie W, nothing would put our goal keeper at threat. In fact Zach only touched the ball once during the first half, so keeping warm was a struggle. Nonetheless, great play down the wings from Jasiu and James would constantly feed Ryan with opportunities. It didn't take long for the Boreham defence to be broken with some good build up play through the middle with Ollie passing the ball to Ryan who finished with aplomb. He quickly notched up his second with some quick feet by James and a neat pass for Ryan to pounce on. With two goals up at half time we knew the game was far from over.
Ollie W took his place between the sticks and the battle continued in the middle of the park. With Zach L on the left wing he would 'have a field day today' as one of the Stingrays supporters put it. And that proved to be the case as Zach took the game by the scruff of its neck and notched up a second half hatrick. All goals coming from dribbles down the left, cutting in/out, around a number of players and finishing with either his left or right foot. A wonderful spectacle at times.
Some great play by James down the right and the ever improving Jasiu would help the boys push forward, whilst the team maintained a good shape throughout. Only one lapse of concentration resulted in a goal against the Stingrays, but was forgiving, as the boys were putting in a real shift. Tired legs were evident for the boys playing outfield for both halves. Zach continued to be a threat, eager to get more goals and Ryan up front was always ready to pounce on crosses and loose balls from either flanks. The final whistle blew and a great victory (and display of teamwork and effort) for the Stingrays. MOTM To James for his improving awareness of players on the pitch and 'scanning' and all round effort. Well done Stingrays.
Next match at home vs Boreham Village again. Kick off at 10.30am
