A trip across the county saw the Stingrays hosted by South Woodham Ferrers United Tigers - a new opponent for our boys. A full squad travelled eager to carry on the high level of performance we have seen from the team so far this season.
The game kicked off and the Stingrays were under early pressure from the home team. From early exchanges, it appeared that the boys were in for a tough morning, with the opposition spending plenty of time in our half. However, as usual the resolute defending from Oliver R and George D, who worked their socks off covering the back line, was enough to keep out the opposition, with Freddie G in goal stopping anything that did get through.
Eventually the Stingrays got their game going, competing in midfield and playing pass and move football when in possession, with the midfield trio of Ollie W, Christian J and Spencer S working hard, carrying the ball forward with every opportunity and getting back when required. Midway through the half, subs were made, but this did not affect the Stingrays rhythm in anyway, carrying on competing in all positions.
Sam S got straight into the game in midfield, winning challenges and getting forward at every opportunity and George W continued his great start to the season with another strong performance.
Late into the half, the breakthrough came, and it was a goal for the Stingrays. Fine work from Ryan E on the left put the ball across the box for Jasiu C to expertly side foot the ball into the far corner, leaving the keeper with no chance.
This was soon followed by a second, with great work by George W carrying the ball out of defense, supplying the ball to Spencer S who’s fine shot was well saved by the keeper, but the rebound fell to Ryan E who side footed the ball home - a goal richly deserved for his first half performance.
It was 2-0 at Half time.
After a good half time talk and refuelled with Jaffa Cakes and Oranges, the 2nd half kicked off. The game was end to end, with the opposition having a number of chances, with our GK for the half Ryan E stopping all that was thrown at him.
At the other end, our boys had two great chances, first with fine footwork by Ollie W to get into the box only to see his shot rebound off the bar, followed by Christian J, who’s performance deserved a goal, see his effort also come back off the bar.
It was tense stuff - the next goal being incredibly important…. and when it came, it was the one that put the Stingrays in the strong position to go on and win the game. Great work from Spencer S to feed the ball through to Freddie G who finished with ease from inside the box.
The fourth soon followed, the ball coming across from the right into Freddie G, who stepped past their last defender to side foot into the corner.
The opposition continued to press but the boys held out, keeping a clean sheet, which was as rewarding as the goals we scored. The final whistle came, the game finishing 4-0 to the Stingrays.
MotM was Christian J - who was everywhere - carrying the ball forward with great effect when in possession, and always determined to win the ball back when not. Well-deserved Christian!
Well played all - another strong team performance with every boy playing their part in a great win.
Also a thank you to all who travelled to support the team.
