Match report - 12 March 2017
This week the Stingrays would welcome Hedingham Utd to Laundry Lane, on an early, mild morning, perfect conditions for a game of football. Both home and away supporters took up their positions on the touch line as the boys started their warm up exercises and drills.
Some quick passing, followed by shots on goal, quickly got the boys in the mood and it was clear to see the Stingrays were looking forward to putting in a better performance than the previous week.
MOTM last week was George W for his excellent tackling and he would be captain this week, to lead the boys into battle.
The game kicked off and with some neat passing between the boys, you could see that the managers instructions were being put into action. The Stingrays kept their shape well and tracking back was really pleasing to see. Jockeying was also being implemented well and little (if no) chances came Hedinghams way.
Only one goal in the first half (could have been lots more) which came from a throwing being volleyed into the area by James and Zach running into it to slide it past the on rushing keeper. The ball nestled into the corner of the goal, for Zach to notch his 17th of the campaign, joining Ryan E as top goal scorer.
Little else to report in the first half as the boys stuck to their shape and the main battles happening in the middle and out on the flanks.
Second half and Jasiu, Christian, James, Zach all continued to track back well and with Ollie W in the middle, nothing much would get past him. George D and George W were solid at the back and Ryans quick feet and movement would help drive the team forward. Freddie, between the sticks, had little to do throughout the game as his defenders protected the game in front of him.
However, from a mistake at the back and a resulting corner, the boys found themselves picking the ball out of the back of the net. A Utd striker tapped a goal in when the ball sailed over everyone's head, bobbled around and fell kindly to one of their players.
A tough goal to concede as the boys were playing well, but maybe a fair result as the final whistle blew.
Excellent refereeing from Steve D, making good decisions on both sides and allowing the game to flow. Thanks Steve and all supporters, as usual. And well done Stingrays for a sound performance.
Plenty to focus on in training, but the boys are playing with a smile on their face and the after game antics and 'silly photos' show us that they are enjoying themselves.
Next game - away to Notley Youth Kestrels. Kick off TBA.
