This weekend the Piranhas made the long trip over to South Woodham Ferrers in their latest league fixture, against the Pumas this time around. It would seem that the SWF teams would prove to be an early nemesis for the boys in orange.
The lads have looked good in previous games and training sessions, working hard on making short passes, movement off the ball and moving the ball quickly. The morning didn’t start particularly well as due to the number of matches taking place, there wasn’t really anywhere suitable for the lads to complete a proper warm-up, so whether this affected the team going into the match is not really clear.
That said, the conditions were the same for both teams so no excuses, and the Piranhas did look sharp in the exercises they were able to complete.
There was no Louis F today as he was away completing commercial obligations on behalf of his sponsors.
Charlie T started on the bench and, as always, all the boys would get exactly the same playing time. The team lined up with Charlie W in goal, Tom A and Sam M at the back. A midfield trio of Leo M, Harry H and Zach L, who was suffering from a slight knee injury. Cameron M started up front.
Leo M was captain of the side today and joined the Pumas skipper for the coin toss.
The game got underway and in the early exchanges it looked a really even contest. The team were passing and moving nicely and the defenders were nulling the threat of the SWF attackers. It soon became clear that it wasn’t going to be the Piranhas day and the first goal really affected the flow of the performance.
Tom A and Sam M at the back were doing their best to keep the Pumas at bay making some great last-ditch tackles and Charlie W in goal made a couple of decent saves.
The midfield worked hard but it felt like the boys were chasing the game early on. Zach L tried his best to get attacks moving with his runs up and down the wing, Harry H was bursting forward and Leo M was tenacious in the tackle. Cameron M made runs to try to ignite the team as did Charlie T when he came on but it was a real up-hill battle.
The lads came in at half time, looking dejected. They probably didn’t deserve the score-line they faced, however, it was fair to say the Pumas were the better side.
For the second period, Zach L went in goal and Charlie W moved out on to the left side. The team put in a better second half performance which included a goal from Charlie T as he followed up Harry H’s long range effort to slide past the keeper.
There is really little else to say about the game. It was a really tough morning for the Piranhas but it does give us a lot to focus on in training. I can never question the effort of this team and the boys gave 100% as they always do when they step out onto the pitch, however, all the boys need to learn if they go a goal down, they need to keep their heads up and continue to play the same way.
Unfortunately today, once the Pumas had scored a couple, the lads reverted to playing long balls and trying to be too individual, where it has been the teamwork and passing football that has served them so well in the previous weeks. The gap between the defence and midfield was too great and the boys seemed uncomfortable in possession, causing them to make blind passes.
We won’t dwell on the game, we will just put it down to a slight blip as I cannot praise the boys highly enough for the work they have been showing in training. This is certainly not down to a lack of effort. The Pumas played really well and will be a match for any team and on this occasion, things went well for them. Good luck to them going forward.

We will continue to work hard on the training pitch and hopefully next week, we can revive our fortunes. Chins up boys, the effort will pay off! Man of the Match today was Tom A for his continued defensive battling. Thanks as always to the travelling supporters and to Richard for the great photos. Well done lads! Next match - Away v Wilvale Rangers. KO - 10am. |
