The Piranhas came into their latest fixture in great form and a trip away to Maldon & Tiptree Pumas would be an exceptional test for this ever-progressing team. It’s been a couple of seasons since we played the Pumas as they have been playing a year up so we knew this would be a really tough game. They always have a solid midfield and well organised defence.
Before the game started, both teams lined up for a minute’s silence to remember the service men and women who have lost their lives fighting for their countries over the years, on the day that saw the end of WWI exactly 100 years ago. Both teams, coaches and parents observed the silence impeccably for the second week running. A real credit.
John R was the only absentee away on international duty, leaving us with the rest of the squad to choose from. The team lined up with Russell L in goal. Tom A in the centre of defence with Leo M and Sam M either side of him. Charlie W anchored the midfield again with Cameron M and Zach L on the wings. Thomas R took up the attacking midfield role with Charlie T up top. Rufus G and Louis F started on the bench.
The Piranhas got the game underway playing against the wind. The team started the game really well, playing the better football early in the game, spreading the ball wide at every opportunity. The lads just couldn’t find that final pass to break the deadlock. The Pumas were extremely well organised as we expected and it was clear the Piranhas would have to work hard for every opportunity.
Rufus G and Louis F came into the game and the good build up play continued. The Pumas started to come into the game and forcing the team back towards their own goal. This caused a little panic and the usual crisp passes started to go a little astray. We started to show the Pumas a little too much respect and the team from Maldon took full advantage.
There was lots of huff and puff from the boys in orange but it was clear today wasn’t going to be their day.
It wasn’t the best performance from the team, however, there was a lot to take away and work on. Maldon filmed the match and we have requested a copy – this may help us to demonstrate the things we would like to improve.

MOTM went jointly to Charlie W and Louis F. Charlie is an absolute workhorse in the midfield and Louis F was solid at the back, keeping the Pumas at bay for much of the game. Great Team mate went to Russell L. We all know what a great keeper Russell is, and to add to that he has started to communicate to the rest of the team in front of him. Thanks to Darren M for running the line. Thanks, as always, to the Piranhas travelling faithful. It’s the days like this when things don’t go exactly to plan that the support and encouragement is most important. Well Done Lads! |
