After being spoilt with glorious weather over the summer months, we were all brought back down to earth with a bang on Sunday as the great British winter came in with a vengeance!
It was a very wet, extremely cold Sunday morning as the Piranhas travelled to Chelmsford to take on Galleywood Falcons. The team had been hit by a couple of last minute injuries with Sam M and Thomas R both failing last-minute fitness tests. Zach L was touch and go for the start of the game as he was taking part in a swimming gala before making the dash over to Galleywood.
As we tried to warm the team up, it was very clear that the cold had come as a complete shock to all of them and we did our best to keep the lads moving.
The team talk this morning was supposed to be about toughening up against teams like Galleywood as we know we can play football, however, we have had a slightly soft centre in recent weeks and given teams too much respect. In truth the team talk was spent encouraging the boys to keep moving, keep warm and just do their best. We were proud of them for coming to play in such terrible conditions.
The game got underway with Russell L in goal, Leo M and Tom A at the back with John R just in front of them. The midfield trio was Harry H flanked by Charlie W and Cameron M with Rufus G and Charlie T up front. Louis F was sub along with Zach L when he turned up.
It would be fair to say that the Galleywood boys got used to the poor conditions much quicker than we did and they got off to a flying start scoring a couple of early goals. The psychological effect this had on our cold Piranhas was huge and the heads started to drop a little.
Early into the game, Charlie W received a kick to the back of the leg which left him unable to continue. Zach L and Louis F came into the match. Every single player put in 100% effort but the team found it really difficult to get going.
The high points for the Piranhas were a lovely strike by Zach L and outstanding goalkeeping from Russell L who made a string of great saves including one from the penalty spot. The opposition managers were commenting on how good he was in goal.
The team were all pleased to hear the final whistle in a match that we will now put behind us. I cannot fault the effort of team and the bravery to come out in such conditions, demonstrating how much they want to help the Piranhas and play football. Now that the first cold game is out the way, we can be a little more prepared going forward. The most annoying thing was the bright sunshine that turned out in the same afternoon!!

MOTM today was Russell L. An easy decision – Russell was outstanding. Great Team Mate was Cameron M who covered many KM’s running for his team. Thanks to Mike R for stepping in last minute to run the line and thanks as always to the Piranhas faithful coming out in the dreadful weather to support their young footballers, especially important on days like this one where they need all the encouragement they can get. Well done lads! Next match – Home v Witham Whites. KO – 13:00. |
