After a slightly disappointing performance in the last game, the Piranhas were very keen to get back on track this week against a great adversary in Wilvale Rangers. The Piranhas v Wilvale fixture has become renowned for some classic battles and we didn’t expect this one to be any different.
The fixture saw the Piranhas playing at home this time around and with Harry H returning from illness, we had a full squad to choose from. The focus for the warm-up was to get back to our slick passing football, quick movement and good communication. The team looked ready for action.
Skipper, Charlie T, went up for the coin toss and the match was ready to get underway.
The Piranhas lined up in familiar fashion with the ever-reliable Charlie W in goal, Tom A and Leo M in defence, Zach L, Harry H and Cameron M in midfield with Charlie T leading the line. Sam M and Louis F started on the bench today safe in the knowledge they would get the same playing time as everyone else.
In recent weeks it would be fair to say that the performances have been a little inconsistent, however, when the team have played well, things just haven’t really gone their way and today was going to be one of those days. The boys started the match like a whirlwind and took the game straight to Wilvale, starting right from the back.
Charlie W was prowling the edge of his box, offering his team an extra player if they needed it. Tom A and Leo M were organised at the back and Wilvale never got near the Piranhas goal. Sam M also looked solid when he came into the game.
Harry H was obviously back to his normal self, breaking up play in the midfield and looking for support from his wingers Zach L and Cameron M who were constantly up the line. Louis F immediately picked up the pace of the game when he came into the action. Charlie T was supporting his wingers and looking to make things happen for his team.
Shot after shot reigned on the Wilvale goal but the ball just would go in! The team hit the post four times during the game! The truth is the team could have been five up before Wilvale had their first attack.
Inevitably, Wilvale did come into the game, however, their first two goals were some-what gifted to them by the Piranhas. Two back passes to Charlie W - no problem with that, as we have been encouraging that from the lads - it is the next bit that we need to work on. The lads in front of Charlie were too close to him and not making the right angle meaning Charlie had no-one to pass to. The attacker picked up the ball and rolled into the net on both occasions. Not anyone’s fault, just something we need to learn in training.
At half time, we had to pick the lads up trying to reassure them they were playing well enough to get back into the game. Charlie T went in the sticks and Charlie W went up top.
The second half got underway and the game became extremely stretched giving both sides chances. The Piranhas were still playing well but it was the visitors who had the best chances forcing Charlie T into two world class saves, drawing praise from the opposition manager.
Tom A wanted to get his team back into the game and went on a one-man crusade playing in every position! As the Piranhas marauded forward, Wilvale nicked a third right at the death when a long clearance found their attacker on his own and he finished well.
It was a great performance from the Piranhas which left everyone scratching their heads as to how we were on the wrong end of the result. Their attitude was brilliant and if the team continue to work hard, their luck will turn again soon. We will get back on the training pitch to look on how we can improve.
Well done to Wilvale, another great game.

Well done to Wilvale, another great game.
Thanks to Darren Mantle for a great refereeing display, keeping the game moving and helping players from both sides, and thanks as always to the Piranhas’ faithful for coming out in support of the team. MOTM was split today between Tom A and Charlie T. Tom A was full of energy and when everyone else had conceded defeat, Tom was still determined to get something from the game. Charlie was a goal threat in the first half and had an unbelievable performance in goal in the second. WELL DONE LADS! Next Match - Away v SWF Pumas. 11:30 KO. |
