Another Saturday morning fixture was in store for the Piranhas this weekend, with a number of the team away on holiday meaning it would be difficult to pull a team together for the match against Broomfield Knights. The last time the two teams met, the Piranhas put in the performance of the season with only six players, however, the team has seen confidence dip a little since then so we knew this would be a really difficult match. We all knew despite the date of this fixture, the Piranhas would not be able to fool around in this one!
The lads were down to six players with Harry H, Tom A and Etien H all missing. Ryan E from the Stingrays agreed to step in at the last minute to make the sides even in numbers (only agreed after the team photos were taken!!).
It was a beautiful spring morning and we got the lads together early to talk about recent performances and how we were going to approach this one. We discussed playing the ball out from the back, getting into the right positions to receive passes, using one-two’s effectively and tracking back.
With no training to determine the captain today, Charlie T took the armband. The ref called the captains together and Broomfield got the game underway.
The match started as a very tight affair with the sides really going toe to toe. Broomfield had a couple of early chances which Charlie W dealt with in his efficient manner. The Piranhas football was flowing and they were implementing the messages we spoke about before the start of the game.
Ryan E had fitted into the team well over on the left of the midfield and played a couple of great passes through to Louis F who had an early chance. Charlie T also came close putting an effort just wide. Cameron M on the right went on one of his trademark powerful runs and blasted just wide. It was a great start.
The defensive duo of Sam M and Leo M were bringing the ball out from defence comfortably, with no unintended long passes. It was great football all round.
Despite the Piranhas’ great start, it was Broomfield who went ahead with a good move of their own. This would now be an interesting test for the team as they were behind in another game. The Piranhas lifted their heads and their spirits and battled their way back into the match with a great flowing move. Ryan E picked the ball up and played a pass out to Louis F in the left Channel. Louis picked his head up and played a great pass into Cameron M who struck home from close range. A great goal.
Broomfield restored their lead with nearly their next attack but the Piranhas tails were up and they soon equalized again. A move out from the back finding Ryan E who passed into Cameron M to finish well for his second.
Sam M, Leo M and Charlie W were standing firm at the back but were finding themselves isolated in more attacks as the Piranhas were getting caught up the pitch a little, another area the team need to work on.
At half time, we were full of praise for the boys as the football at times was great to watch, we just highlighted the need to get behind the ball when we lost it. A couple of changes were made with Leo M taking his place in goal meaning Charlie W would come into defence. Louis F dropped into midfield and Charlie T went up front.
The Piranhas tired legs had stated to show and getting back was becoming more and more difficult. Charlie W was full of energy in defence and Leo M made some great saves, however, when Sam M had to come off the pitch for treatment the Knights’ star player took advantage and bagged a couple of fantastic goals that no keeper would have got to.
The Piranhas’ heads had now dropped and the weary boys struggled to compete towards the end of the match giving a score line that the team didn’t deserve.
The lads didn’t go out with a whimper though and some great moves could have resulted in a couple of goals for Charlie T, which three or four weeks ago would have ended up in the corner of the net, but are now going just wide. Charlie couldn’t hide his frustration!

The game probably didn’t end in the way the Piranhas would have liked, however, they can be extremely proud of their performance, up against it today with no subs. MOTM was Cameron M for his two great finishes and a hard-working performance. I am extremely proud of every single player, after some difficult recent weeks the boys did everything we asked them to. If they continue to do that and we work on the areas highlighted, we will come through this tricky spell a better team. The boys will have a couple of weeks break now which they thoroughly deserve. It will give them a chance to recharge their batteries and get some of that confidence back. |
Thanks to Ryan E for stepping in at the last minute and having a fantastic game. Thanks to Ross Morley for his usual, accomplished refereeing display and thanks, as always, to the Piranhas faithful, encouraging the boys through thick and thin.
Well done to Broomfield Knights and we wish them luck for the rest of the season.
Well Done lads!
HAPPY EASTER EVERYONE!
Next Fixture - TBC.
