A week after they graced the Stamford Bridge turf, it was a slightly shorter trip over to Paringdon Social club in Harlow to play in their annual tournament. The sun was shining again and the pitches looked in great condition.
The Piranhas made their way over to their allocated pitch to begin their warm-up routines, which wouldn’t take long in the warm spring weather.
The team were missing Harry H and Louis F today as they were both away on international duty, meaning the seven remaining players would face a test of stamina as they would play every minute of every game. The tournament would also be an opportunity to have a look at players in some different positions.
The Piranhas were placed in the Madrid group and would face the following teams:
- Paringdon Youth Lions
- Buckhurst Hill Royals
- Frontiers Pumas
- Harlow Town Harriers
- Frontiers Panthers
After some disappointing results the weekend before, the Piranhas seemed determined to get back to player their best football, knowing that the top two teams would face off again in the final. Over the next few hours, the team really did themselves and their supporters proud:
Piranhas v Harlow Town Harriers. The eventual winners on the tournament, Harlow Town, proved just too strong for the Piranhas with a very narrow victory. The team had to do a lot of defending against a very good side but they stuck to their task well and gave the Harriers a tough game, with Charlie W, Tom A and Sam M proving a formidable force.
Piranhas v Buckhurst Hill Royals. The eventual runners-up of the tournament losing only on penalties to Harlow Town. A great performance from the Piranhas being the only team to beat Buckhurst Hill in open play with two goals from Cameron M, second following a defence splitting pass from Etien H.
Piranhas v Paringdon Youth Lions. The Piranhas felt they should have won this game, with some real clear-cut chances going begging. Paringdon stuck to their task and kept the boys in orange at bay.
Piranhas v Frontiers Pumas. The winners of the tournament last year would prove tough opposition but the Piranhas held firm and matched their rivals. Following one great save from Charlie T, he was unable to get down quickly enough to a last minute drive from the Frontiers striker. Really unlucky.
Piranhas v Frontiers Panthers. The Piranhas looked back to their best, knocking the ball around the pitch making it difficult for the Panthers. Leo M had the defence under control and Sam M provided the finishing touch to a Charlie T corner.
The last minute goal scored against the team by Frontiers Pumas meant the Piranhas just missed out on a place in the final, however, after the disappointment of the weekend prior, the team were looking a force again. Every player contributed in a number of positions and by the time we got to the last game, the passing moves were flowing and the confidence was high.
The lads were shattered as they went to collect their well-deserved medals, showing just how much effort had been put into the games. The loyal Piranhas faithful gave the team a round of applause to show just how proud we all are of this team. No matter how things go on the pitch, we always stand together. Dunmow UNITED!
Next tournament - Sporting 77, 17th June 2017. 8:30 registration.
Well done lads!
