This would be the final tournament of the summer for the Piranhas so they wanted to put in a real performance to take them into the holiday season. The team were down a player as Louis F failed a late fitness test so would be able to make it. The lads all wished him well.
Another sunny morning greeted the team as they pulled up ready for action, as always supported in numbers by their army of faithful fans. As the team warmed up, we explained that we would be playing them all in their strongest positions today and we would see how far this could take us through the tournament.
A rather unusual format lay ahead with only three group matches followed by a quarter final. The Piranhas group saw them face the following teams:
Match 1:
Piranhas v Hoddesdon Blacks. The Piranhas made their intentions known early in the tournament with a free-flowing performance. The first goal coming from Charlie T with a right foot shot and the second from the head of Cameron M. I think it could be the Piranhas first intentional headed goal! Cameron then netted a third goal following a Charlie W pass. Sam M and Tom A we solid at the back and kept everything out.
Match 2:
Piranhas v Frontiers Panthers. Another classy performance from the boys in orange. Harry H opened the scoring, firing in the bottom corner following a Charlie T throw. Charlie T then netted twice with two good strikes. Leo M was solid at the back, not allowing Frontiers any space.
Match 3:
Piranhas v FC LAFA Blues. The eventual tournament winners. The Piranhas started brilliantly going two goals up early on. Cameron M scored the first goal as he latched onto Charlie T’s headed flick on. The second goal came from Harry H who followed up on a shot from Etien H that rebounded off the keeper. The blues fought hard and got themselves back into the game, with a draw seeming a little hard on the Piranhas but goal difference meant they topped the group.
Quarter-Final:
Piranhas v Bengeo Sabres. Again, the Piranhas looked really comfortable in this game but the cutting edge they had been enjoying seemed to desert them a little. Bengeo put up a great defence and the match ended up going to penalties. There was no shortage of confidence with every player wanting a spot-kick. Charlie W in goal made two great saves leaving Tom A the job of converting the wining penalty which he did with style, sparking jubilant scenes! Semi-finals here we come!
Semi-Final:
Piranhas v Buntingford Blues. The team were really up for the game and looked like they were destined to make the finals, however, they came up against a sturdy defence. The lads had half chances but were unable to make their dominant possession count, Buntingford had two break-away chances and scored from both.
A superb effort from every player to make the semi finals of a tournament for the first time. The lads were naturally disappointed they couldn’t go onto the final to play FC LAFA Blues again but they could hold their heads up high. They had entertained their fans as they always do. The supporters, as always, were magnificent and really encouraged the lads throughout the morning.
Have a great summer everyone!
WELL DONE LADS!
