Match day three of the season saw the orange army travel up the A120 to face Braintree Town Irons in their latest Blackwater and Dengie league fixture. The Irons have spent quite some time in the top division so we were expecting another tough game.
The Piranhas had just started to settle into their new training slot on Friday evenings so we would see first-hand if this would help the lads to apply focus. It was clear from the warm up session that it had the desired effect. The boys were calm, well -behaved and looked up for the challenge ahead as they completed a quick passing drill with determination and energy.
The squad was back to full complement with Sam M returning from injury and Leo M back from international duty. Charlie T skippered the Piranhas today and elected to kick off in the first half.
Right from the start the team looked like they were going to bring their focus off the training field straight into the match. The midfield three of Charlie T, Zach L and Louis F took control of the match and set the tempo for the passing. Zach L showed his intent with some early runs down the left wing causing havoc in the Braintree defence. Charlie T closed up any space in the centre and was looking to gets moves started and Louis F was determined as ever, battling for the ball.
The defensive partnership of Leo M and Tom A were calm and assured and didn’t really give the Braintree attackers a sniff of a chance. Their distribution of the ball was also impressive, with no long passes, just measured balls into the midfield.
The first goal soon came as a result of a great passing move. Charlie T picked up the ball in the middle of the park and sprayed a great ball out to Zach L on the left. Zach with an instant touch and pass found Cameron M in acres of space and Cameron placed the ball past the keeper. Nothing more than the performance had deserved.
Harry H and Sam M came into the action and quickly picked up the pace of the game and were getting stuck into the Irons.
Goal number two came following some great work from Cameron M winning the ball. He passed out to Zach L who cut inside and fired a shot past the keeper. The lads were on fire.
The performance in front of Charlie W meant that he was having a quiet game, however, he was called upon when the Irons went through one-on-one. Charlie stood up big and made a fantastic save. Great concentration from Charlie.
The Piranhas have been a little guilty of letting leads slip in games, however there was no sign of that as they continued to press hard. Harry H won the ball in the middle of the park and fed Zach L who went on an amazing run, beating three players and firing a shot which was well saved, fortunately Cameron M was following up to tap home. A great run and shot from Zach, deserving of a goal.
Harry H soon got in on the goal action bagging one for himself with a good finish as the boys came in at half time looking in great shape. It was the best half of football we have seen this season. The Piranhas machine was purring!
Leo M went in goal for the second half and Charlie W came out. It wouldn’t have mattered what changes we had made, the team was in full flow. Charlie W and Zach L were linking up nicely creating chances. Sam M was showing no signs of rustiness after his injury with a determined performance. Louis F looks full of confidence at the moment and seems to be enjoying his football and Tom A just gets better and better with every passing week, although he does sometimes need reminding which sport he is playing - Football not Rugby ☺ Harry H seems to have all his energy back and is like a dynamo in the middle of the park and Leo M looked assured between the sticks.
Braintree did manage to pull a goal back before Cameron M completed his hat-trick following some strong play.
The team did tire towards the end but that was no surprise after the effort they had all given. Despite some weary legs, they still kept Braintree at bay and reduced their chances to a minimum.

The Piranhas travelling support were in full voice today and were treated to an exhibition. There were a number of contenders for MOTM, with the award going to Cameron M, not only for his hat-trick but for his all-round effort in the game. Well done to Braintree Town Irons and we wish them luck for the rest of the season. Well done lads! Next match - Home v Valley Green Hotspurs. 11.15am KO. |
