This was the second meeting of the season between these two sides and although this one was a lower scoring contest than previously, it was an exciting battle between two defensively disciplined sides. The match was played on a 3G pitch and was a bigger playing area than usual which also contributed to chances being at a premium.
Some nice passing was shown by both sides in the first half but it was difficult for either team to create many clear cut chances – both defences were strong with Jesse, Louie and George doing a terrific job in Barracudas’ defence to keep Great Bradfords at bay.
It was Great Bradfords who broke the deadlock however, with a well worked goal ending with a neat finish that goalkeeper Charlie could do nothing about.
With just one goal in it at half time, there was certainly still all to play for in the second half. Once again, chances were hard to come by with Alfie also now helping the defence keep the goals out in this half. On the rare occasions that the defence was breached, goalkeeper Charlie was equal to it, with some solid goalkeeping, good kicking and showing a safe pair of hands.
Ollie M, George and Tyler were all working hard in midfield to protect the defence and support the attack, while Josh was looking for opportunities to break through the tight Great Bradfords’ defence, with excellent support from Zak.
Time was ticking and it remained a tight game, but with around six minutes left on the clock, Barracudas were finally able to break through the excellent Great Bradfords’ defence. It started from a Great Bradfords’ attack which was superbly defended by Jesse, who then proceeded to drive forward, playing a perfectly weighted pass to Josh, who timed his run, controlled the ball, showed some pace to get past the last defender and finished low and hard to the goalkeeper’s right. As well as being an important goal for the team, it was also a personal milestone for Josh as it was his 150th goal for Barracudas.
While Barracudas were delighted to be back in the match, they weren’t finished yet. With just a couple of minutes remaining, a short throw from Tyler close to the corner flag was passed back by Josh. Tyler then put in a high cross which the goalkeeper had to stretch to parry – the ball fell to Jesse, who scored his first goal for Barracudas with a low finish through a crowd of players.
It was a well deserved goal for Jesse who had been excellent all game. The team’s celebrations were great to see too, Jesse sprinting the full length of the pitch all the way to goalkeeper Charlie (while none of the other Barracudas could catch him!).
That was the last of the goalscoring action as Barracudas were able to see the match out from there.
After the match both Tyler and Jesse received honourable mentions, Tyler for his fantastic workrate and covering an impressive amount of ground in midfield, while Jesse contributed with an assist, a goal and a defensive clean sheet whilst he was on the pitch – a great effort. The Man of the Match trophy however was awarded to Josh, who worked hard up front and chipped in with an important goal at a good time in the match, with a nicely taken finish.
It was a nice way to mark his 150th Barracudas goal in addition to being presented with a commemorative t-shirt by manager Ross! Josh scored his first ever goal for Barracudas against Great Bradfords Tigers back in September 2016 and now notched his 150th against the same opposition!
All the Barracudas can be proud of the way they fought and battled to the end in what was a very difficult match. There were some good signs of the continuing improvement of this group, in particular there were some excellent passing moves and the defending was very disciplined. Well done to all!
