Barracudas were up against Danbury & Bicknacre Blues for the second time this season, having already been involved in an excellent match against them on the opening day. These two sides have played a few good matches against each other over the past few seasons and this was no exception.
It was Barracudas who got off to the better start and in just the fourth minute of the game, a defence splitting pass from Alfie found Josh through on goal with a one on one against the keeper and he made no mistake, firing low and hard into the net. The remainder of the half was very even with a number of corners for both sides, some good attacking play and strong defending.
George, who was playing in defence today, was extremely disciplined, holding his position well and allowing the opposition few opportunities. On the occasions that Danbury did manage to break through Barracudas’ defence, Charlie was equal to it – he really had a safe pair of hands and his kicking was outstanding.
The second half began much as the first half finished, with a very even contest, but in the seventh minute of the second half, Danbury got themselves on the scoresheet. There was very little that Barracudas could do about the goal which was a tremendous run and finish from their winger.
Danbury did start to dominate for a spell - with Barracudas having the bare minimum seven players and no subs, they were perhaps beginning to tire as the game went on. However there were still good periods of play for Barracudas and numerous corners at both ends of the pitch. It was only in the last seconds of normal time that Barracudas conceded again. Again, there was little that they could do about it as a well struck free kick from long range flew beyond the wall and keeper.
Even though we were now into added time and there were tired legs, Barracudas didn’t give up and then managed to hit the bar twice in quick succession through Tyler, one direct from a corner and then again from the follow up shot.
As Barracudas pressed forward, Danbury then broke away and in the third minute of added time, scored another as their striker who was through on goal was brought down and the resulting penalty was dispatched.
With no subs, it was an impressive performance by all seven lads that played today – they absolutely gave their all, played some good football and were extremely unlucky in the end. Tyler, playing the ‘midfield general’ role was all over the pitch, Ollie battled really hard for the team as always, Louie made some lovely runs down the wing and held his position well while Josh led by captain’s example up front, giving great encouragement to his teammates, going on some good runs and getting a goal.
Special mentions for George, who showed his versatility by excelling in an unfamiliar defensive role and Charlie who had a fantastic game in goal, but the Man of the Match trophy was awarded to Alfie for a spirited display, for working hard, making some nice runs and playing a lovely pass through to claim an assist for Barracudas’ goal.
Well done all!
